I love the English language. When used properly it is precise and creates clarity in one’s thinking.
noun \ˈprin(t)-s(ə-)pəl, -sə-bəl\
a moral rule or belief that helps you know what is right and wrong and that influences your actions
noun \ˌī-dē-ˈä-lə-jē, ˌi-\
the set of ideas and beliefs of a group or political party; the integrated assertions, theories and aims that constitute a sociopolitical program
Principles are universal. Principles do not change over time. Principles remain valid regardless of the political and social environments that prevail at any point in history.
Ideologies morph and change to suit the aims of the proponents of an ideology. Ideologies distort principles into monsters that make the ideology more important than humanity itself.
Principles withstand the onslaught of ideologies. The Inquisition was a distortion of Christian principles just as Islamism may be seen as a distortion of Muslim principles. Napoleon and Hitler distorted the principle of national pride. The KKK transformed the principle of ethnic pride into ethnic hate.
These ideologies fail in time. However, new ideologies arise from the ashes of failed ideologies. Remnants of ideologies incubate and reappear. Putin wants to resurrect the Communist ideology of the USSR. Al Sharpton distorts black pride into a KKK-like ideology that mangles the core principles that make the USA the greatest country in human history.
It’s time to demand leaders that rely on principles and eschew ideologies.
Waddayathink? Am I wrong? Did I miss something?
